Soccer bond between U.S., England runs deep

There is a close relationship between the United States and England, and there always has been. Besides sharing a language, the two countries share a great deal of culture and even plenty of soccer connections.

One of the U.S. men's biggest victories in their history came against England back in 1950 when Joe Gaetjens historic goal thrust his team to a famous 1-0 victory.

At the time, the loss was so unbelievable that when people saw the score they thought it was a typo and that England must have won. Not the case, as the team that was given 500-to-1 odds of winning the World Cup were able to knock off a team with 3-1 odds.
The two countries are also, as almost everyone knows, paired together in this month’s World Cup. Their second-ever World Cup meeting could be just as memorable as the first.
