Maradona leads call for fair play - without a hint of irony

A drug cheat and the perpetrator of the most infamous handball in football history is, on the face of it, hardly the ideal ambassador for a campaign to promote fair play.


Normal boundaries, however, have never really applied to Diego Maradona and so, without even a hint of irony, he used his final press conference before his first match as a World Cup manager to deliver a sermon on honest football.

"Let there really be fair play, let the referees understand what the words 'fair play' mean," he said. "If you don't want to play clean football then go up into the stands."


Conveniently, Maradona pointed out that Fifa's drive for fair play began in 1990 - after his 'Hand of God' goal against England in 1986 - and he had certainly not forgotten the way his unique skills made him such a target. "When fair play started in 1990, I got a kick from a guy against Cameroon that nearly took my head off," he said, smiling.


Maradona was certainly relaxed enough on Friday ahead of his first involvement in a World Cup match since failing a drugs test in 1994.


At one point, he even complained, tongue-in-cheek, to an Argentine reporter that he was made to look bad in photographs taken of him this week.
Maradona did, however, get serious as he explained how it felt to have the hopes of Argentina resting on his shoulders ahead of Saturday's match against Nigeria.


"I was much more nervous as a player," he said. "I was telling Javier Mascherano that I had sweaty palms, I was wondering how I was going to play, I was trying to save energy while I was playing.


"I live just as intensely today but I'm not as nervous because I completely believe in the 23 players that I have. I'm going to live or die with these 23 players. We've planned together, we train together, we speak together.


"I know what the people back home are expecting and feeling. I believe we will start building towards a dream. Many of us cherish this dream and this dream had not come true for quite some time.


"It's great what we have. We are proud, we're happy, and I think we've had good preparation. These 23 players, these monsters, these fighters, give me great peace of mind when I see them, which I've never felt before."

Stirring words - and backed up by the quality of his squad. Predicting Maradona's team selection is never easy, but the expectation is that he will pair Juan Sebastian Veron with Mascherano in midfield, meaning he must choose two forwards from Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito and Sergio Aguero.


The one certainty is that Messi will start; a player who genuinely could have the same sort of imprint on the tournament as Maradona had in 1986.


"I would love to see that," said Maradona. "I certainly would appreciate it if he could have the same leading role that I had then. But behind Lionel there is a whole team backing him up and he should be the cherry on the cake.


"I just hope from the bottom of my heart that Lionel gets to show what he can do and that he has the best performance of all time."

If you have yet to understand just what Maradona means to Argentina, it was perhaps necessary only to listen to Messi's response.

All week long Bafana Bafana's followers had been preaching belief, but there were still plenty of sceptics around here.

Brazil's World Cup winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira may have guided South Africa's football team on a 12-match unbeaten run going into Friday's World Cup opener against Mexico, but the doubters felt scalps like Thailand and a draw with Japan wasn't something to crow about.

They didn't believe in magic.They so nearly were turned into converts on Friday, but in the end, a 1-1 draw between the two Group A protagonists was a fair result, as the 2010 World Cup finals came alive on the pitch after an intense week-long build-up that have left many expecting great things from the 19th edition of the tournament.

South African President Jacob Zuma called it Africa's World Cup, when he declared the tournament open minutes before kick off.


The organisers will be licking their lips at the prospect of the continent's first World Cup becoming one of the special editions in the history of the event after a pulsating first game that threw up numerous chances and great end-to-end action.

This time it was South Africa who began to carve out gilt-edged chances, only to draw groans from the crowd as they failed to seal what would have been a crucial win.


With 11 minutes to go, Mexico sent a nation into despair when Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez fired home from close range after the home side's defence went to sleep.


Katlego Mphela so nearly became a South African hero near the end but one-on-one with the 'keeper, his effort hit the post to ensure the spoils were shared.


At least the result meant the two sets of fans who got on so well together at Nelson Mandela Square in the build-up to the game would remain united in song at the post-game party, still dreaming of a place in the last 16.

Naxal attack: Dantewada SP, 14 others transferred

Raipur:Chhattishgarh government today transferred the Dantewanda Police Superintendent and 14 other officials, more than two months after 76 security personnel were killed in an ambush by Maoists in the area.


Acting on the recommendations of the Rammohan Committee, formed after the incident, the BJP government transferred 11 IPS officers, including Dantewada Superintendent of Police Ambrish Mishra, and four state-level policemen, official sources said.


On April 6, Naxalites had killed 75 CRPF personnel and a police officer.


The Committee appointed by the Union Home ministry headed by Rammohan, former DGP of Border Security Force, had fixed the responsibility for the lapse on these police officials, officials said.

Goa woman's death case: police raid Pacheco's house

Panaji:Police today conducted raids at the residence of former Goa minister Fransisco Pacheco in Betalbhatim village near here and also issued a look-out notice against his aide and co-accused Lyndon Monteiro in connection with the death of a woman friend.
"Seven computers have been confiscated after a team led by inspector Tushar Vernekar conducted extensive search of Pacheco's residence in Betalbhatim village (40 km from here)," a top official said.
Pacheco had to step down as tourism minister and is on the run after his name was involved in the death of 28-year-old Nadia Torrado. Crime branch has already named Pacheco, along with his aide Monteiro, as accused in the case.
Police also a issued look-out notice against Monteiro, who is missing since June 6.
A sessions court in Margao has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Monteiro and Pacheco.

Swine flu deaths

Thiruvananthapuram:Kerala Government has stepped up preventive measures following the death of two women due to swine flu and reports of spread of various types of fever, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said today.


District medical officers have been instructed to take all necessary steps to check spread of diseases, he told reporters


Local body authorities have also been alerted on the matter and had been asked to convene meetings to prepare programmes to tackle the situation, Achuthanandan said.


A woman each from Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram succumbed to the swine flu virus since last night and the state now had 19 confirmed cases, health department sources had said yesterday.


Official sources said some more H1N1 cases and fever of various types have been reported across the state.


Sources said Sundaran, official driver of Chief Minister Achuthanandan, has been admitted to the General Hospital with swine flu.

Kerala in grip of viral outbreak, 25 dead

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At least 25 people have died and hundreds more hospitalised with dengue, H1N1 and rat fever since pre-monsoon showers hit Kerala over a month ago. The outbreak hasn't even spared CM V S Achuthanandan's office with his driver testing positive for H1N1.

Thursday's causalities included two girls with swine flu and an HR manager of a reputed private hospital in the state capital, who succumbed to dengue fever. Fifteen new H1N1 cases, 6 Chikungunya, 12 Dengue and a rat fever case were also established during the day. Eight fever-related deaths were reported on Wednesday including four cases of dengue and one H1N1.

This is in addition to the thousands, who are turning up at the government hospitals every day with symptoms of various kinds of fever. About 13,000 people took the treatment on Wednesday alone.

Achutanandan's driver Sundaram was identified with Swine Flu earlier this week. Ironically, it came a day after state health minister P K Sreemathi denied that the situation was alarming and blamed the media for spreading panic.  

Kerala’s snake boat make it to Thames river

Thiruvananthapuram:  Kerala has sought the central government’s financial help to showcase its famous snake boat before the British queen on London’s Thames river next month.Speaking here Tuesday, state Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar said: "The state government has earmarked a sum of money but that is not enough. We have requested the central government to help us but we are yet to hear from them. The oarsmen, who have to power the boat forward, are ready but money is an issue."

The proposal to this effect came from an organisation Keralyeem, which has its roots in Britain, that is interested in showcasing the race as part of a trial run of the inaugural ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. Queen Elizabeth II is expected to watch the July 8 event. The organisers of the event have roped in actor Suresh Gopi as the brand ambassador for the event.

Speaking here, Gopi said that the commitment that he has made stands and he will foot the bill to transport the boat to London. "My fans’ association has agreed to pool in Rs.20 lakhs required to be paid to the Shipping Corporation of India for transporting the snake boat to London. Other things like arranging for the remaining funds and visa for close to 120 oarsmen are still to fall in line," said Gopi. The state government has already sanctioned Rs.one crore for the event but this is not going to be enough. "The air fares for the oarsmen is also going to cost a hefty amount. The organisers were supposed to get back to me two days back.

"But we are not disheartened because we have been able to do this much in such a short span of time and if for some reason it (its participation in London) does not happen this time, we will do it next year," said Gopi.

The length of a snake boat made out of ’anjili wood’ varies from 120 to 140 feet. In view of the high cost of transportation, if the snake boat finally makes it to London, then after the event it would be gifted to be placed in a museum there.

The origin of the race dates back to 1952 when an impromptu event was conducted in honour of the country’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who was visiting the state. Nehru was so thrilled by the performance that he himself jumped into a snake boat.

On returning to Delhi, Nehru donated a silver trophy -- a replica of a snake boat placed on a wooden abacus with an inscription and his signature.

This trophy is given away every year to the winner of the boat race held at Alappuzha.

Malayalam novelist Kovilan dies

THRISSUR: Noted Malayalam novelist Kovilan died at a private hospital atKunnamkulam near here early today.
He was suffering from some respiratory problems, his family said.
Kovilan (87) is survived by two daughters and a son.A freedom fighter, Kovilan, whose real name was V V Ayyappan, worked in the Royal Indian Navy from 1943 to 1946 and from 1948 to 1968 in the Corps of Signals.Born on July 9, 1923 at Kandanassery in Guruvayur, Thrissur, Kovilan was a recipient of the state government’s highest literary honour Ezhuthachan Puraskarom in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Malaylam literature.

Ahead of the empowered group of ministers’ (eGOM) meeting Monday to consider pricing policy on petrol and diesel, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) opposed any move by the government to hike prices of petroleum products. The BJP said any hike in prices of petrol and diesel will further increase prices of essential commodities. The CPI-M politburo in a statement Sunday described the likely hike in the petroleum products as “unwarranted”. “It will have a direct impact on purchasing power of common citizens,” BJP spokesman Tarun Vijay told IANS. He said the exercise to consider hike in prices of petrol and diesel should be “deemed as a failure of the United Progressive Alliance government on economic front, ironically run by an economist prime minister”. Asked about the decisions taken for decontrol of diesel and petrol prices by the previous BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, he said “those decisions were taken in different circumstances when prices were under control”. The eGOM, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, is scheduled to meet Monday to discuss pricing policy of petrol and diesel, including pricing decontrol. Petroleum Minister Murli Deora met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday to discuss fuel price issue and decontrol of petroleum products. The CPI-M too, like the BJP, came out against any hike in petrol and diesel prices. In a statement issues at the end of two-day politburo meeting here Sunday, the party said any hike in prices of petroleum products will be unwarranted. “There are reports that the government is considering a further increase in the prices of petrol, diesel and other petroleum products. This will be totally unwarranted and impose a crushing burden on the people in view of the continuing increase in food prices and inflation,” the statement said. The Congress, however, said that the government had always taken a carefully considered decision on prices of petroleum products. “The prices have been increased only when there is no other option. The hike has been minimum and what is necessary,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

 PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, who was recently questioned in connection with the 2008 Bangalore blasts case, today denied having any role in the serial attacks that claimed the life of a woman. While admitting that Bangalore Police had elicited some information from him and his wife Soofiya at Kochi, he said it was not a lengthy interrogation as made out by a section of media. Madani, undergoing treatment in a hospital here for ortho-related complaints, told a television channel that Bangalore Police had questioned him for about 15 minutes and sought details of some district leaders of his party.
According to reports, Madani and his wife were questioned based on statements given to police by T Nazeer, an accused in the Bangalore blast.

Kannur police charge case on K. Sudhakaran

The Town Police here on Monday evening registered a case against K. Sudhakaran, MP, following a report by District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan.
The case was registered under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duties), Section 448 (criminal trespass) and Section 294-B (use of obscene language) of the Indian Penal Code. Though the offence under Section 353 is a non-bailable offence, police officers declined to say whether the MP would be arrested in connection with the case.
Congress leaders including Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy went into a huddle in the capital to discuss the situation. The police said the case was registered in connection with Mr. Sudhakaran’s alleged argument with election officials at the taluk office here on October 16. The case raised apprehensions in UDF circles that the police might arrest the MP.

The Election Commission Friday removed Kannur District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan and appointed two observers following complaints by the Congress party of irregularities in the Nov 7 by-poll process.
The commission, however, rejected the Congress’s demand for a new voters’ list in the politically volatile Kannur assembly constituency.


The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has criticised the poll panel’s decision to change the district collector.


“We are appointing two observers. The two observers and the joint CEO have been told to camp there, so that each complaint coming in the press should be looked into and a report submitted to the election commission,” said Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla in New Delhi.


Chawla said the commission has decided to remove the district collector and got a panel of three Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officers from the Kerala government for appointing a new collector at Kannur.


“We have got a panel. We are in the process of selecting a new district election officer, district magistrate. Yes, we are changing the existing official,” he told reporters.


Balakrishnan had come under attack from the Congress which alleged that he did not take an impartial stand when it came to preparing the voters lists.




Rejecting the Congress’s demand for another voters list, Chawla said: “The voters list is sealed. Cannot change it. One of the things that we must prevent is that there must not be any fraud.”
According to the office of the state revenue minister, the three names suggested by Chief Secretary Neela Gangadharan include Ishita Roy, Sanjay Kaul and P.B. Salim, an official told IANS on condition of anonymity.


Congress leader and Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran maintained that Balakrishnan “did not do a clean job” when it came to preparation of the voters lists.


Reports indicate that the commission had asked the state government to include two specific names, but these have not been included.


“The commission is free to appoint anyone it thinks is fit for the job and it need not go by the list submitted by the state government,” said Sudhakaran.


The CPI-M reacted in anger to the poll panel’s move.


“The Election Commission is acting on the behest of the Congress party,” said CPI-M Kerala state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, who is in the national capital to attend the party’s central committee meeting which started Friday.


“The commission has crossed all limits by giving such directions. It is anti-democratic. It should not be reduced to a puppet at the hands of the Congress,” Vijayan told reporters here.


The Congress on Tuesday asked Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla to remove all officials, including the district collector, to ensure a free and fair by-election Nov 7.


Winning the Kannur seat has become an issue of prestige for both the ruling Left Democratic Front and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
The Congress has fielded A.P. Abdulla Kutty, who till early this year was a two-time Lok Sabha member of the CPI-M, while the Marxist party has fielded a heavy weight candidate in M.V. Jayarajan, who had won from the nearby Edakadu constituency in 1996 and 2001.


Kutty was booted out of the CPI-M ahead of the May general elections for violating party discipline.


The only time the ruling LDF has won the Kannur seat was way back in 1977.

K. Radhakrishnan named new ISRO chief

K. Radhakrishnan, director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, was Saturday named the next chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Armed with a fax copy of his appointment Radhakrishnan, who takes over from G. Madhavan Nair, visited the famed Sree Krishna Temple Guruvayoor here Saturday evening.


Radhakrishnan said he was told of his appointment by phone from New Delhi. He then gave the number of the temple board office here where his appointment copy was faxed.


“Religion and science go hand-in-hand. And when the two join it is nice,” said Radhakrishnan, when asked about the official communication reaching him at the temple.


Radhakrishnan takes over from Nair Oct 31.


Radhakrishnan did his electrical engineering degree from Kerala University in 1970. He also holds an MBA from Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore and a doctorate from Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur.


He said that his first priority would be to see that the first indigenously developed cryogenic engine be made ready for the launch of the GSLV.
“A huge responsibility has been placed on me and at this moment I would like to thank all my gurus (teachers) and among them are Nair and other former ISRO chairmen like Kasturi Rangan and U.R. Rao,” Radhakrishnan told reporters.


Starting his career with the ISRO as an avionics engineer in 1971, he went on to hold key positions such as director of Regional Remote Sensing Service Centres under the umbrella of National Natural Resources Management System (1989-97).


In 2000-2005, Radhakrishnan was with Department of Ocean Development (presently Ministry of Earth Sciences) as the founder director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and the project director of the Early Warning System for Tsunami and Storm Surges.


He was also the vice chairman of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of Unesco 2001-05.


Radhakrishnan is a member of the Indian delegation to the UN Committee on Peaceful Use of Outer Space since June 2006.
